Aims
The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians .
- Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
Wexham Court Aim
Build Belonging: We choose music that represents and celebrates the different cultures, religions and people at Wexham and around the world. We learn to be respectful of other cultures, we work as an ensemble (team) in music, thinking about how we can improve our music making together.
Strive For Excellence: Our aim is to give children the skills and understanding to be musicians and to be able to play percussion, string, woodwind and keyboard instruments. To sing and talk confidently and knowledgeably about music, for children to be able to express themselves clearly and accurately in music. We study examples of excellence in music as models for children to perform and inspire their own compositions. We aim for children to enjoy music and to leave school with skills in 4 of the main types of instruments. We aim for children to know how to read and write music up to an octave in C major. Children are encouraged to appreciate and talk confidently about music, recognising features and elements of music.
Do The Right Thing: We choose music that teaches positive values. We learn about the discipline of practice, listening, working as a team, being inclusive and reflecting on how we can improve.
